The main caps are responsible for holding the crank in the engine. It is the main cap bolt's job to make sure the caps stay put. With thousands of pounds of force generated by the reciprocating assembly, using a main cap bolt from the spare bolt pile may not be the smartest move and may be in fact dangerous...why risk it?
