Bearing retainers bolt to the front of the transmission (surrounding the input shaft) and support the throwout bearing as it pushes against the pressure plate. More often than not, when the clutch pedal starts to drag and feel "sticky", the bearing retainer is the culprit. After years of sliding back and forth it will slowly wear a groove into the retainer.
