Windage trays are the little hot rod secret that few know about. They are designed to keep the crank from "whipping" the oil in the oil pan, thus foaming the oil (windage) and increasing the resistance on the spinning crank. This is prevented by placing a shield between the crankshaft and the oil in the sump (the windage tray).
